Cath Hughes is a British-Canadian contemporary painter currently living and working in Vancouver, BC.  She holds a BFA in Painting from Oxford University, UK, as well as an MA in Museums and Galleries in Education from London University.  Her work is predominantly narrative and landscape-based and draws on mythology, folklore, art history and personal history.  Cath is currently a student on the post-graduate painting correspondence course facilitated by the Turps Art School in London, UK.

In her work Cath likes to concoct enigmatic narratives with an element of absurdity.  Drawing from landscape and figurative traditions of art history, folklore and mythology, she combines the banal and the imagined to create disarming compositions with a surreal aesthetic.  She is interested in ideas of the otherworldly and the unknown, and the inherent fear associated with encountering these. Cath draws upon her personal history as a British immigrant to Canada and reflect upon the conflation of cultural traditions and histories from her dual nationalities.
